The Danish Festival Kicks Off

Roskilde Festival

Summer in Denmark arrives with a familiar rhythm. Before the beaches fill and the long evenings blur into August, the country's festival season takes over.

The first major gathering is Copenhell, which opens next week with a line-up built for volume and intensity. Iron Maiden, Nine Inch Nails, Suicidal Tendencies, Alice Cooper, Sepultura and Anthrax headline a programme that once again balances established legends with a deeper layer of emerging and underground artists.

Beyond the biggest names, much of the festival’s identity can still be found among the smaller acts scattered throughout the schedule.

For many Danish music fans, however, Copenhell is only the beginning.

Roskilde Rises Again

A week later, Roskilde Festival returns to the fields west of Copenhagen. Few festivals in Europe carry the same cultural weight or sense of collective memory. For more than five decades, Roskilde has been a place where generations of music fans have gathered, creating traditions that extend far beyond the artists on stage.

The Easiest Way to Stay GDPR-Compliant

The 2026 edition arrives with headline appearances from The Cure, Gorillaz, David Byrne, Lily Allen and Little Simz. Yet Roskilde has rarely been defined solely by its headliners.

The festival’s reputation was built on discovery. Across its stages, audiences move between genres, scenes and sounds, often encountering tomorrow’s breakthrough artists long before they become household names. That curatorial approach remains one of Roskilde’s defining characteristics.

In recent years, some attendees have questioned the festival’s reduced emphasis on rock and metal. While those genres remain present, the broader direction of the programme reflects a shift that has unfolded gradually since the early 2000s. Pop, R&B, hip-hop, rap and various strands of contemporary urban music now occupy a larger part of the festival landscape.

The change mirrors the audience itself. With an average age reportedly around 24, Roskilde continues to evolve alongside the generations that make the pilgrimage each summer.

The Forest Festival That Keeps Growing

By August, attention turns to Smukfest in Skanderborg.

Set among the forests and lakes of central Jutland, Smukfest offers a markedly different atmosphere from Roskilde’s sprawling open fields. Its setting remains one of the most distinctive in Scandinavian festival culture, combining large-scale production with a sense of intimacy that has become central to its identity.

One of the more anticipated Danish appearances comes from Ulige Numre, who return to the stage after a nine-year hiatus

The programme has grown steadily stronger over the years. Danish artists continue to occupy a prominent place on the bill, with names including Bæst, Blæst, Lukas Graham, D-A-D and Katinka. Alongside them, international artists such as Julia Cole and Amsterdam-based DJ Olive Angus add new perspectives to the line-up.

One of the more anticipated Danish appearances comes from Ulige Numre, who return to the stage after a nine-year hiatus. Their reunion adds another layer of nostalgia to a festival that increasingly balances heritage with renewal.

A Summer on the Road

At Volt Beats, we will cover both #RF26 and #Smukfest26 throughout the season, publishing daily reviews and festival atmospheres from the ground.

Before that, the journey takes a short detour across the Øresund Bridge to Skåne, Sweden, where the small but increasingly notable Torsjö Live festival awaits.

The Danish festival summer is about to begin. As always, the story will unfold one stage, one crowd and one long Scandinavian evening at a time.
